We always look as if we’re disappearing: Missed Connections between the Caribbean Artists Movement and the British Poetry Revival

Matt Martin's (Birkbeck, University of London) talk given at the Stuart Hall Foundation Fellows and Scholars event on 2nd Feb 2018 at Conway Hall, London.

This paper considers the parallel activities of the Caribbean Artists Movement and the British Poetry Revival in London during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Perhaps the most exciting configurations of poets in the city during that period, these groups had much in common aesthetically and politically, yet barely interacted at the time. This paper investigates why they did not engage with one another, the possible gains had they done so, and how poets might avoid missing such opportunities in future.
